A Compostable Alternative to Plastic Bags After Spain’s World Cup Victory

Spain’s victory celebration reminds us that even the world’s most valuable moments still rely on everyday packaging—and that better material choices are available.

Spain’s 1–0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final created images that will be remembered for years.

One unexpected image, however, attracted attention for a very different reason.

After the celebrations, Spanish defender Marc Cucurella was seen leaving the stadium carrying what appeared to be a World Cup trophy replica inside a simple transparent plastic bag.

The contrast was striking.

One of football’s most recognisable symbols was being carried in one of the world’s most ordinary packaging products.

The moment was light-hearted, but it also raised a serious question:

When a bag is needed for only a short time, does it always need to be made from conventional plastic?

Every Bag Has a Life After Use

A plastic bag may be used for only a few minutes.

Its environmental impact can last much longer.

This is why packaging decisions should not focus only on how a bag looks or performs while it is being carried. Businesses also need to consider what happens after the bag has completed its job.

At Shandong Orizon Biomaterials Co., Ltd., we manufacture compostable and biodegradable bags for brands, distributors, retailers and waste-management projects.

Our bags are designed to provide practical performance during use while offering a more responsible end-of-life option when they are collected and processed under suitable composting conditions.

Compostable bags can be produced for applications including:

They can also be customised with different sizes, thicknesses, colours, printing designs, roll formats and private-label packaging.

Compostable Is More Specific Than “Biodegradable”

The terms “biodegradable” and “compostable” are often used as though they mean the same thing.

They do not.

Biodegradable is a broad description indicating that a material can be broken down through biological activity. Without clearly defined conditions or a testing period, however, the term may provide limited information about how or where that process will take place.

Compostable materials must meet more specific requirements.

Under the appropriate composting conditions, certified compostable bags are designed to break down through biological processes without leaving conventional plastic fragments behind.

That does not mean they should be dropped on the ground or released into the natural environment.

Responsible collection, clear disposal instructions and access to suitable composting systems remain essential.

Orizon provides compostable bag solutions for markets requiring standards and certification programmes such as EN 13432, ASTM D6400, OK compost HOME, OK compost INDUSTRIAL, AS 4736 and AS 5810, subject to the applicable product specification and certification scope.

Performance Still Matters

Sustainability claims cannot replace product performance.

A bag must still carry its contents, resist leakage and meet the practical requirements of the customer using it.

Our manufacturing team considers factors such as:

  • Load-bearing strength
  • Film thickness
  • Seal strength
  • Tear and puncture resistance
  • Transparency or opacity
  • Print adhesion
  • Roll dimensions
  • Shelf life
  • Storage and transport conditions

The correct material formulation and bag specification depend on the intended application.

A lightweight produce bag, for example, has very different requirements from a commercial bin liner or a thick sanitary disposal bag.

This is why we do not recommend selecting a compostable bag based on size alone. The contents, expected load, disposal route and local certification requirements should all be reviewed before production.

From a Viral Image to a Better Choice

The image of a trophy travelling inside a plastic bag may soon be replaced by the next viral moment.

The packaging question will remain.

Bags are used at stadiums, hotels, airports, retail stores, festivals, restaurants and public celebrations every day. Many are used only once, making material selection especially important.

Not every plastic application can be replaced immediately, and compostable packaging is not the correct solution for every waste stream.

However, where bags are likely to be mixed with food waste, organic material or other compostable contents, certified compostable alternatives can provide a practical option.

Spain’s victory showed the world what excellence on the football field looks like.

The unexpected bag carrying the trophy replica offers another reminder: even during the biggest celebrations, small material choices still matter.

The next historic moment may still need a bag.

The question is whether it can be a better one.
