Compostable Retail & Supermarket Packaging Solutions
Supermarkets use different bags for produce, checkout and in-store waste.
ORIZON manufactures compostable flexible bag packaging for these applications.
Our main supermarket packaging solutions include produce bags, shopping bags and compostable bin liners. We also support custom size, thickness, printing, roll configuration and private-label packing for B2B programs.
Our focus is flexible compostable bags.
We do not manufacture rigid trays, clamshells or paper cartons.
What Compostable Packaging Solutions Are Available for Supermarkets?
There is no single bag that works for every supermarket department.
A produce roll has different requirements from a checkout bag. A food-waste liner has different requirements again.
The table below shows the main areas we support.
| Supermarket Application | Packaging Solution | What Buyers Usually Need to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh fruit and vegetables | Compostable Produce Bags | Film clarity, thickness, food contact, roll and dispenser fit |
| Produce roll systems | Custom Produce Bag Rolls | Core ID, roll OD, perforation, winding direction and dispenser size |
| Checkout and carry-out | Compostable Shopping Bags | Bag size, thickness, handle style, printing and expected load |
| In-store food waste | Compostable Bin Liners | Bin size, thickness, seal, wet-load performance and certification |
| Private-label programs | Custom Printed Compostable Bags | Artwork, colors, certification marks and packing |
| Multi-store procurement | OEM & Bulk Supply | MOQ, carton packing, pallets, delivery terms and repeat supply |
Start with the application.
Then build the bag specification around it.
Fresh Produce Packaging Solutions
Fresh produce packaging has to work in the store, not only on a specification sheet.
For loose fruit and vegetables, buyers often need to consider:
- film clarity
- bag size
- film thickness
- food-contact requirements
- bags per roll
- paper core
- finished roll diameter
- perforation
- dispenser compatibility
A roll can look correct on paper and still fail if it does not fit the existing dispenser.
Choose the Right Produce Packaging Resource
If you are sourcing produce bags, start with the page that matches your project.
| Buyer Need | Recommended Resource |
|---|---|
| I need a general produce bag range | Compostable Produce Bags Wholesale |
| I need a custom film, size, core or roll | Custom Compostable Produce Bags |
| I am replacing an existing supermarket roll | Produce Bag RFQ & Dispenser Guide |
| I need to compare film clarity | Produce Bag Transparency Guide |
| I need help selecting film thickness | Produce Bag Thickness Guide |
| I need roll-fed fruit and vegetable bags | Compostable Produce Bags on a Roll |
For an existing supermarket system, I would not start by asking: “How many bags can we fit on one roll?”
A better starting point is:“What roll size can the dispenser accept?”
Then the bag count, core and thickness can be built around that limit.
Produce Bag Roll & Dispenser Systems
A produce bag is only one part of the system.
The full system includes:
Bag → Roll → Paper Core → Perforation → Dispenser
Changing one part may affect another.
For example, increasing film thickness while keeping the same bag size and bags per roll usually increases the finished roll diameter.
If the dispenser space is fixed, that matters.
Die-Cut Handle Bags
For replacement programs, we recommend checking:
- finished roll width
- core inside diameter
- core length
- dispenser shaft diameter
- finished roll OD
- maximum dispenser roll OD
- perforation
- winding direction
Our Produce Bag RFQ & Dispenser Guide explains how to measure these items before requesting a quotation.
For custom production and real dispenser-fit checks, see Custom Compostable Produce Bags.
Checkout & Carry-Out Packaging
Checkout bags need a different specification from produce rolls.
Here the buyer is usually more concerned with:
- bag dimensions
- film thickness
- handle style
- carrying load
- printing
- bag color
- certification requirements
- carton packing
Compostable T-Shirt Bags
T-shirt or vest-style bags use integrated handles and side gussets.
They are commonly used for grocery and retail carry-out programs.
See our Compostable T-Shirt Shopping Bags.
Die-Cut Handle Bags
Die-cut handle bags use a cut-out handle instead of a vest-style structure.
They can be used for suitable retail and private-label programs.
See our Compostable Die-Cut Handle Bags.
The final bag should be selected around the expected load, local requirements and actual checkout use.
A larger bag does not always need the same thickness as a smaller one.
Test the complete specification.
In-Store Food Waste & Bin Liner Solutions
Supermarket packaging does not stop at the checkout.
Produce departments, preparation areas and staff areas also create food and organic waste.
Common applications include:
- fruit and vegetable trimming waste
- damaged or spoiled produce
- food-preparation waste
- staff kitchen waste
- organic-waste collection
The right liner depends on more than bin capacity.
Buyers should also check:
- actual bin dimensions
- waste moisture
- expected load
- film thickness
- bottom seal
- bags per roll
- local organic-waste rules
For medium indoor bins, see our 20L–60L Compostable Bin Liners.
For the wider product range, see Compostable Bag Products.
How Should Supermarkets Choose Compostable Packaging?
Start with the use case.
Not the environmental claim.
When we review a supermarket project, five questions usually come first.
1. Where Will the Bag Be Used?
Is it for:
- fresh produce
- checkout
- food preparation
- back-of-house waste
- private-label resale
The answer changes the product structure.
2. What Does the Bag Need to Do?
Confirm:
- size
- thickness
- expected load
- seal
- transparency
- printing
- handling conditions
A produce bag may need good visibility.
A bin liner may need better wet-load performance.
3. Does It Need to Fit Existing Store Equipment?
For produce rolls, check the dispenser.
For liners, check the actual bin.
Do not rely only on terms such as: “standard dispenser”
or: “30L bin”
Physical dimensions are more useful.
4. Which Market Requirements Apply?
Check the destination market, composting route, food-contact requirements and labeling rules.
A certification that applies in one market may not answer every requirement in another.
5. How Will the Product Be Supplied?
Confirm:
- MOQ
- bags per roll
- rolls per carton
- retail packing
- pallet requirements
- repeat-order volume
- shipping terms
A compostable claim should not replace a complete product specification.
Compostability Certification & Market Requirements
Compostable packaging does not use one worldwide certification system.
The correct requirement depends on the destination market and the intended composting environment.
| Market | Common Starting Point | ORIZON Resource |
|---|---|---|
| United States | ASTM D6400 / BPI where applicable | USA Compostable Products |
| Europe | EN 13432 and applicable local requirements | EU Compostable Products |
| Australia – Commercial Composting | AS 4736 | AS 4736 Compostable Bags |
| Australia – Home Composting | AS 5810 | AS 5810 Compostable Bags |
ASTM D6400 covers plastics and products designed for municipal or industrial aerobic composting facilities.
In Australia, AS 4736 relates to commercial composting and AS 5810 to home composting. The Australasian Bioplastics Association also notes that certification does not automatically mean a product will be accepted by every local organics program.
For a broader comparison, see our Compostable Certifications Guide.
You can also review current company and certificate information in the ORIZON Verification Center.
Intended Use of Our Produce Bags
Our compostable produce bags are developed for loose fresh fruit and vegetable applications in supermarket produce departments.
They are not positioned as general food packaging.
We do not offer these bags for applications that require additional food-contact compliance documentation, such as packaging for:
- meat
- bakery products
- prepared foods
- cooked foods
- other food-contact applications that require specific regulatory documentation
For produce-bag projects, please tell us:
- destination market
- type of fruit or vegetables
- bag dimensions
- film thickness
- printing requirements
- roll and dispenser requirements
We will review the project based on its intended fresh-produce use.
For applications that require FDA-related food-contact documentation, we are not able to provide the required documentation.
Custom & Private-Label Supermarket Packaging
Many supermarket projects do not use an off-the-shelf specification.
Custom options may include:
- bag width and length
- film thickness
- film color
- Pantone printing
- logo printing
- bags per roll
- paper core dimensions
- perforation
- labels
- retail boxes
- master cartons
- pallet packing
For a produce roll, the bag and dispenser should be reviewed together.
For a private-label shopping bag, artwork and certification-mark requirements should be checked before mass production.
If you already have an existing product, send us the current bag, roll or packaging as a reference.
That is often the fastest starting point.
OEM Supermarket Bag Solutions
OEM means the product is manufactured to the buyer’s agreed specification and may be sold under the buyer’s own brand.
For supermarket projects, the approved specification can include:
- product dimensions
- thickness
- material
- color
- print artwork
- roll configuration
- core
- packaging
- certification requirements
We recommend keeping one approved specification and reference sample for repeat production.
This reduces confusion when the same SKU is reordered months later.

Retail & Supermarket Packaging FAQ
We manufacture compostable produce bags, shopping bags and bin liners for supermarket and grocery retail programs.
Custom size, printing, roll configuration and private-label packing are available for B2B projects.
Fresh produce programs may use roll-fed bags, flat open-top bags or handle bags.
For roll systems, film thickness, clarity, core size, roll OD and dispenser fit should be checked together.
See our Compostable Produce Bags Wholesale page for available formats.
Yes, but the roll should be matched to the actual dispenser.
Check core ID, roll width, finished roll OD, shaft diameter, perforation and winding direction before bulk production.
See our Produce Bag RFQ & Dispenser Guide.
It depends on the destination market and composting route.
For example, ASTM D6400 is used for municipal and industrial aerobic composting applications in the US, while Australia uses separate standards for commercial and home composting.
The finished product and certification scope should be checked before claims or certification marks are used.
Yes.
Custom projects can include bag dimensions, thickness, film color, printing, roll configuration, labels, retail packing and cartons.
Certification-mark use should be confirmed separately where applicable.
