What Makes a Compostable Bag Certified?
A certified compostable bag is more than a bag made from compostable raw material.
Third-party certification applies within a defined scope and may relate to a specific finished product, material or approved product configuration depending on the certification program.

DIN CERTCO / EN 13432
EN 13432 is a European technical standard relating to packaging recoverable through industrial composting and biodegradation.

AS 4736 Compostable Bags
For Australian commercial or industrial composting applications, including certain FOGO procurement programs, AS 4736 certification may be relevant.
Actual certification applicability and local acceptance should be confirmed against:
- the current certificate scope;
- finished-product specification;
- council requirements;
- composting-facility requirements; and
- procurement conditions.
AS 5810 Compostable Bags
AS 5810 relates to home-composting conditions in Australia.
It should not be confused with AS 4736, which addresses commercial or industrial composting.
Certification applicability must be confirmed against the applicable current certificate.

Certification is only one part of product compliance.
Depending on the destination market, buyers may also need to consider:

Custom Printing & Certification Marks
Adding a customer logo does not mean that a certification conformity mark can automatically be printed beside it.
For certification-sensitive products, artwork should be reviewed before mass production.
This is particularly important where artwork includes:

- Australian compostability marks;
- certificate or registration numbers; or
- compostability claims.
The right to manufacture a product covered by a certificate and the right for another brand to use a certification mark should not automatically be treated as the same thing.

For private-label projects, the finished bag may be sold under the buyer’s own brand.
Depending on the certification program, product scope and proposed mark usage, additional authorization, registration, sublicensing, certificate extension or related procedures may be required.
Certification and conformity-mark requirements should therefore be confirmed before final artwork approval.
