What Are the Dimensions of a 55 Gallon Trash Bag?
There is no single universal dimension for every 55 gallon trash bag.
This is one of the main points buyers miss.
Current commercial compostable products show quite different dimensions. OrangeBio lists a 55 gallon liner at 38 × 56 inches. BioBag lists a 55 gallon liner at 38 × 58 inches. Green Paper Products sells a 55 gallon liner at 42 × 48 inches.
All three are sold as 55 gallon liners.
Why?
Because: 55 gallons describes approximate container capacity. It does not define one universal flat bag width and length.
The correct dimensions depend on:
- container shape
- opening width or diameter
- bin depth
- bin height
- rim shape
- required overhang
- tying or closure method
This is why we recommend measuring the actual container instead of copying another supplier’s dimensions.
For a full gallon, liter, inch and centimeter comparison, see our Trash Bag Size Guide.
How to Measure a 55 Gallon Drum for the Right Liner
If you already have the drum or commercial trash can, measure it before approving the bag size.
Round 55 Gallon Drums
Measure:
- opening diameter
- container height
- any wider rim or handles
- the amount of liner overhang you need
A useful starting estimate for a round container is: Minimum flat bag width ≈ container circumference ÷ 2
For bag length, allow enough material to reach the bottom and fold over the rim.
A practical starting formula is: Bag length ≈ container height + half the diameter + extra overhang
The final size should still be tested on the actual drum.
Square or Rectangular Commercial Cans
Measure:
- width
- depth
- height
- top rim
- required overhang
For these bins, flat width is affected by both the width and depth.
Do not choose a liner from gallon capacity alone.
What Size Bag Fits a 55 Gallon Drum?
A 55 gallon drum needs a liner that is wide enough to cover the full opening and long enough to reach the bottom with extra material over the rim.
The label 55 gallon is only the starting point.
For example, a common round steel or plastic drum may need a long, relatively narrow liner, while a square 55 gallon commercial can may need more flat width.
That is why the market contains several different liner dimensions under the same 55 gallon label.
If you are developing a custom 55 gallon drum liner, send us:
- drum diameter or width × depth
- height
- required overhang
- waste type
- expected load
We can review the liner size before quotation.
55 Gallon vs 56 Gallon Trash Bags
A 55 gallon and a 56 gallon trash can are close in capacity.
They are not always the same shape.
A 55 gallon container may be a round drum. A 56 gallon commercial trash can may be square or rectangular. That changes the liner dimensions.
55 gallon and 56 gallon trash bags should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.
Before switching between the two, compare:
- container opening
- width and depth
- height
- rim size
- required overhang
A 56 gallon commercial trash can often uses liners around 43 × 47 inches or 43 × 48 inches, but the correct size depends on the actual container shape and dimensions. Many 56 gallon products on the market are conventional HDPE or LDPE liners rather than compostable bags.
If you need a compostable liner for a 56 gallon bin, send us the actual container dimensions. We can review whether an existing 55 gallon specification fits or whether a custom liner is needed.
If the physical dimensions are close, one liner may fit both.
If the shapes are different, it may not.
Is 55L the Same as 55 Gallons?
No. This is an easy mistake to make.
55 liters is only about 14.5 US gallons.
55 US gallons is about 208 liters.
A 55L trash can is therefore much smaller than a 55 gallon drum.
If your buyer sends only: “55” always confirm whether they mean: 55L
or: 55 US gallons
before quoting the liner.
Can a 55 Gallon Bag Fit a 50 Gallon Trash Can?
Sometimes.
It depends on the actual container dimensions.
Some commercial 55 gallon liners are sold for both 55 gallon and certain 50 gallon containers.
Green Paper Products, for example, states that one of its 55 gallon liners fits selected 55 gallon Brute bins and 50 gallon outdoor inserts.
But this does not mean every 55 gallon liner will fit every 50 gallon can.
Check the opening and height first.
A slightly larger capacity label may provide useful overhang, but too much extra film can also create poor fit or wasted material.
Commercial Uses for 55 Gallon Compostable Liners
Large compostable liners are most useful when the waste stream matches the intended composting program.
Organic Waste Collection
55 gallon compostable can liners can be used for suitable commercial organics programs where large bins are used for:
- fruit and vegetable waste
- food scraps
- compostable service items where accepted
- other approved organic material
Wet organic waste can become very heavy.
For that reason, do not select the liner from gallon capacity alone.
The expected load, thickness, seal and handling method matter too.
Facility and Janitorial Programs
Large commercial compostable liners may also be used in facilities that have a separate organics collection stream.
Examples include:
- offices
- schools
- campuses
- event venues
- commercial buildings
The waste stream should be clearly defined before the bag specification is approved.
For a wider commercial range, see our Commercial Compostable Trash Bags.
Yard and Green Waste
55 gallon compostable liners may be suitable for leaves, grass and other approved green waste.
Wet leaves and grass can add a lot of weight, so larger volume does not always mean the bag should be filled to the top.
For projects focused mainly on lawn, leaf and garden collection, see our Compostable Yard Waste Bags.
What These Bags Are Not Designed For
A compostable commercial liner should not automatically be treated like a conventional contractor bag.
Sharp metal, broken glass, construction debris and other hard or pointed waste can create very different puncture loads.
If your application contains this type of waste, tell us before selecting the material and thickness.
How Thick Should a 55 Gallon Compostable Trash Bag Be?
There is no single correct thickness for every 55 gallon compostable trash bag.
Current commercial products already show a wide range. Green Paper Products lists one 55 gallon liner at 0.85 mil, BioBag lists one at 0.88 mil, while OrangeBio lists a heavier 55 gallon product at 1.5 mil.
That difference is useful.
It tells us that capacity alone does not decide thickness.
When a buyer asks us: “What thickness should our 55 gallon bag be?”
I would first ask:
- What goes into the bag?
- Is the waste dry or wet?
- How heavy will the load be?
- Is the bin round or square?
- Will staff lift the bag by hand?
- Are there sharp or irregular items?
- Which seal structure is required?
A thicker film uses more material and increases cost.
A thinner film may reduce material use, but it still has to perform.
The right approach is to test the finished bag against the intended load.
For a deeper micron and mil comparison, see our Compostable Bag Thickness Guide.
Star Seal vs Flat Seal for 55 Gallon Liners
The bottom seal affects how the liner carries the load.
Flat Seal
A flat seal uses a straight sealed bottom.
It is a simpler structure and can work well for suitable commercial applications.
Neither seal is automatically better for every project.
Star Seal
A star seal folds the bottom of the bag into several sections before sealing.
It can help spread the contents across the base of the liner and is often considered for round bins and moisture-bearing waste.
The final choice should be based on:
- bin shape
- bag dimensions
- waste type
- expected load
- leak resistance requirements
For a new 55 gallon commercial liner, we recommend testing the complete structure rather than approving the seal by name alone.
Compostability Certification and Facility Acceptance
A compostable claim should be tied to a defined standard.
For the US market, ASTM D6400 covers plastics and products designed for aerobic municipal and industrial composting facilities. The current ASTM D6400-26 standard describes this industrial and municipal composting scope.
BPI also separates Commercial Only certification from Commercial & Home certification because the composting conditions are different.
For custom 55 gallon compostable liners, applicable programs may include:
- ASTM D6400
- BPI
- EN 13432
- TÜV OK compost INDUSTRIAL
- TÜV OK compost HOME
- AS 4736
- AS 5810
The correct program depends on the destination market and finished specification.
Certification marks should only be used after the product specification and certificate scope have been checked.
For current ORIZON certification information, see our Compostable Bag Certifications.
Certified Does Not Mean Accepted Everywhere
This is another point buyers should check early.
A certified compostable liner may meet the required compostability standard, but local composting programs and facilities can still have different acceptance rules.
BPI itself works with composters on barriers to the acceptance and processing of certified compostable products, and its infrastructure resources distinguish between facilities that accept these materials and those that do not.
Before ordering a large program, confirm: Will the intended composting or collection facility accept this type of liner?
That question can prevent a costly specification mistake.
Custom 55 Gallon Compostable Liners for OEM & Private Label
A 55 gallon liner does not need to follow a fixed retail specification.
For B2B projects, custom options can include:
| Custom Item | Available Options |
|---|---|
| Bag Dimensions | Based on actual bin or drum |
| Thickness | Custom |
| Bottom Seal | Star seal / flat seal / project-specific |
| Film Color | Natural, green or custom |
| Printing | Logo, instructions or approved artwork |
| Bags per Roll | Custom |
| Roll Format | According to packing requirement |
| Retail / Bulk Packing | Custom |
| Master Carton | Custom |
| Pallet Packing | Export configuration |
| Private Label | Supported |
| OEM Production | Supported |
If you already use a conventional liner that fits well, send us the existing bag dimensions or a physical sample.
That gives us a better starting point than the words: “55 gallon bag.”
For US-focused B2B sourcing, see our USA Compostable Trash Bags Manufacturer page.
Bulk Packing, Cartons and Pallets
For wholesale 55 gallon compostable trash bags, packing should be developed after the final liner specification is confirmed.
Why?
Because the following all affect the finished roll and carton:
- bag width
- bag length
- thickness
- bags per roll
- roll diameter
- roll weight
A heavier 55 gallon liner packed at a high bag count may create a very different carton from a lighter specification.
For bulk projects, we normally confirm:
- bags per roll
- rolls per carton
- carton dimensions
- carton net and gross weight
- cartons per pallet
- pallet height
- shipment method
Do not fix the carton size before the bag and roll specification is approved.

55 Gallon Compostable Trash Bags FAQ
There is no single universal bag dimension for every 55 gallon drum.
Measure the drum diameter and height, then allow enough width to cover the opening and enough length for the bottom and rim overhang.
Commercial 55 gallon liners on the market use several different dimensions.
Not always.
The capacities are close, but the containers may have different shapes.
A round drum and a square commercial can can require different liner widths and lengths.
No.
55 liters is about 14.5 US gallons.
55 US gallons is about 208 liters.
They are very different container sizes.
It can in some cases.
The answer depends on the actual width, depth and height of the 50 gallon container.
Check the physical dimensions instead of relying only on the capacity label.
They can be developed for suitable organic-waste applications, but wet waste can become heavy.
Film thickness, seal strength, bag dimensions and actual load should be tested together before bulk production.
No.
Certification shows that a product meets the requirements of a defined compostability program, but local facilities may have their own acceptance rules. BPI also notes that acceptance and real-world processing remain important issues for composters.
Check the intended collection or composting facility before finalizing the program.
Yes.
For B2B projects, dimensions, thickness, seal, color, printing, bags per roll and carton packing can be developed around the buyer's container and application.
Our standard custom production MOQ typically starts at about 500 kg per specification.
