MOQ & Lead Time for Custom Compostable Bags
Standard custom production MOQ typically starts from approximately 500 kg per specification.

What Is the MOQ for Custom Compostable Bags?
Our standard custom production MOQ typically starts from approximately 500 kg per specification.
A specification normally refers to one combination of:
- bag type
- dimensions
- thickness
- film color
- bag structure
- printing design
- production format
Different sizes, colors or artwork designs may require separate production quantities.
This is why MOQ is normally evaluated by production specification rather than using one fixed number of bags or rolls for every product.
If you need to define the bag size, thickness, structure or roll configuration first, explore our Custom Compostable Bags capabilities.
How Does 500 kg MOQ Convert to Bags or Rolls?
A 500 kg MOQ does not represent the same number of bags for every product.
The approximate quantity depends mainly on the weight of each finished bag.
Estimate the Number of Bags
Use:
Estimated bags = 500,000 g ÷ single-bag weight
For example, a smaller and thinner bag will produce more pieces from 500 kg than a large, thick garbage bag.
Estimate the Number of Rolls
For roll products:
Estimated rolls = estimated bags ÷ bags per roll
The final roll quantity may also be affected by production tolerance, winding and packing requirements.
This is why quotations should compare the same bag dimensions, thickness and bags-per-roll specification.
What Affects the MOQ?
MOQ depends on the complete production specification, not only the physical size of the bag
| Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Bag Size | Changes material weight per bag |
| Thickness | Changes material consumption |
| Bag Structure | May require a different production setup |
| Film Color | Custom colors may require a separate batch |
| Printing | Different artwork may require separate setup |
| SKU Quantity | Each specification may require its own production quantity |
| Retail Packaging | Boxes and labels may have separate MOQ |
| Certification Requirements | May affect the approved material and specification |
Certification requirements vary by market and final product specification. Review our Compostable Certifications for more information.
Can Multiple SKUs Share One MOQ?
Not always.
Different sizes, thicknesses, film colors or printing designs may require separate production runs.
For example:
- same bag + different retail boxes may be easier to coordinate
- same size + different print designs may still require separate printing setup
- different sizes or thicknesses normally require separate production planning
- different film colors may require separate material batches
For multi-SKU projects, send us the required quantity for each SKU.
We can then review whether any specifications can be coordinated within the same production plan.
How MOQ Affects Custom Bag Pricing
Order quantity is important, but it is not the only factor affecting the price of a custom compostable bag.
Pricing may include:
- compostable material
- bag weight
- color masterbatch
- printing setup
- printing plates
- packaging
- carton cost
- production efficiency
- pallet requirements
Larger production quantities may reduce some setup and packaging costs per unit.
However, the lowest possible MOQ is not always the most cost-efficient production quantity.
When comparing quotations from different suppliers, use the same:
- dimensions
- thickness
- material
- printing
- bag count
- packaging format
- Incoterm
Otherwise, two unit prices may not represent the same product.
How Is Production Lead Time Calculated?
Production lead time is normally calculated after the required product specification and order details are confirmed.
For printed products, artwork approval is also required before the relevant printing preparation can begin.
Lead time may be affected by:
- order quantity
- material availability
- custom film color
- printing requirements
- printing plate preparation
- custom packaging
- number of SKUs
- current production schedule
Standard or Existing Specifications
Projects using established materials, colors and packing formats generally require less preparation.
Custom Colors
Custom Pantone or other film colors may require masterbatch preparation or color confirmation before production.
Custom Printing
Printed bags require approved artwork and may require new printing plates.
Retail Packaging
Printed boxes, custom labels and other secondary packaging have their own production schedules and may affect the overall order timeline.
Important
Production lead time and transportation time are separate.
Sea freight, air freight or courier transit time should be added when calculating the total time from order confirmation to delivery.

Are Samples Available Before a Bulk Order?
Yes. Samples can be provided for qualified B2B projects before mass production.
The available sample type depends on the project.
Existing or Similar-Specification Samples
Useful for evaluating:
- material feel
- thickness
- seal quality
- perforation
- bag structure
- general product performance
Custom Samples
Custom samples may be required when the project involves:
- special dimensions
- custom colors
- custom printing
- unusual structures
- custom retail packaging
Custom sample timing depends on the amount of preparation required.
Can I Get a Quote Before My Artwork Is Finished?
Yes.
A preliminary quotation can usually be prepared before final artwork is completed.
Please provide:
- bag dimensions
- thickness
- bag structure
- film color
- estimated number of print colors
- packaging format
- order quantity
Final printed-product pricing is confirmed after the print scope and artwork requirements are clear.
Does Retail Packaging Have a Separate MOQ?
It may.
The bag-production MOQ and secondary packaging MOQ are not necessarily the same.
Separate minimum quantities may apply to:
- printed retail boxes
- dispenser boxes
- custom roll labels
- sleeves
- barcode labels
- custom master cartons
For example, a bag order may meet the production MOQ while the printed retail box supplier has a different minimum quantity.
For private-label projects, both quantities should be reviewed before confirming the final order.
If you need branded roll labels, retail boxes, barcode/SKU control or custom cartons, explore our Private Label Compostable Packaging program.
What Information Do You Need for an Accurate Quote?

- Bag type
- Width × length × gusset, if applicable
- Thickness
- Bag structure
- Film color
- Printing requirements
- Bags per roll or pack
- Retail packaging requirements
- Order quantity
- Target market
- Destination country
If some details are not yet confirmed, send us your existing bag, drawing, photo or reference product.
We can identify the missing information before preparing the final quotation.v
Common MOQ & Lead Time Misunderstandings
Smaller Bag Does Not Always Mean a Lower MOQ
MOQ is based on production planning and batch requirements, not only individual bag size.
500 kg Does Not Mean the Same Piece Quantity
A 500 kg order of small dog waste bags may contain far more pieces than a 500 kg order of large garbage bags.
Multiple SKUs Do Not Automatically Share One MOQ
Different specifications may require separate production runs.
Production Time Is Not Delivery Time
Factory production lead time and international transportation time should be calculated separately.
More Printing Colors Affect More Than Appearance
Additional print colors may require additional plate preparation and production setup.
MOQ & Lead Time FAQ
Standard custom production MOQ typically starts from approximately 500 kg per specification.
The final MOQ depends on bag size, thickness, color, printing and production requirements.
Not necessarily.
Different sizes generally require separate production planning. Send the quantity for each SKU so we can review whether any specifications can be coordinated.
It depends on the weight of each bag.
Estimated bags can be calculated by dividing 500,000 g by the single-bag weight. For roll products, divide the estimated bag quantity by the number of bags per roll.
Lead time depends on the final specification, quantity, custom color, printing, packaging and current production schedule.
The production schedule is confirmed after the required order details are approved.
Yes. Existing, similar-specification or customized samples may be available depending on the project requirements.
