EN 13432 Certification & Certificate Verification

This page provides certificate references, scope information and verification guidance relating to ORIZON’s current EN 13432-based industrial compostability certification documentation.

EN 13432 is a European technical standard for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. EN 13432 itself is not a certificate.

Product certification is issued under specific certification schemes and applies only to the products and specifications covered by the relevant certificate.

Shandong Orizon Biomaterials Co., Ltd. currently maintains DIN CERTCO certification documentation for specific industrially compostable bag products.

Certification should not be assumed to apply to ORIZON’s entire product portfolio.

For technical information about EN 13432 testing requirements, biodegradation and disintegration criteria, see:

For consolidated company and certificate verification information, see:

Is ORIZON EN 13432 Certified?

ORIZON holds current DIN CERTCO certification documentation based on EN 13432-related industrial compostability requirements for specified bag products.

Current certificate references include:

Certification applies only within the product and specification scope stated in the applicable DIN CERTCO documentation.

These certificates should not be interpreted as certification of every bag, film, mailer or packaging product manufactured by ORIZON.

What Is EN 13432 Certification?

EN 13432 is a European standard defining requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation under controlled industrial composting conditions.

It addresses technical requirements including areas such as:

  • biodegradation;
  • disintegration during composting;
  • chemical characteristics; and
  • effects on compost quality.

EN 13432 defines technical requirements.

A certification body separately assesses whether a particular material or finished product falls within an approved certification scope.

For detailed technical requirements, see:

DIN CERTCO Scope Does Not Cover Every ORIZON Product

The existence of DIN CERTCO certification does not mean that all products manufactured by ORIZON are covered.

Current certification references on this page relate specifically to the product categories identified in the applicable certification documentation.

They should not automatically be extended to other ORIZON product categories such as:

  • produce bags;
  • garment bags;
  • mailer bags;
  • flexible packaging films;
  • sanitary bags; or
  • other custom packaging configurations.

If certification is required for a particular OEM or private-label product, the proposed finished-product specification should be checked against the relevant current certificate before any certification claim or certification mark is used.

EN 13432 Certification: Material vs Finished Product

Certification documents may apply to a specific material, intermediate or finished product depending on the applicable certification scheme.

A compostable raw material does not automatically mean that every finished product made from that material is certified.

Finished-product certification applicability may be affected by factors such as:

  • product type;
  • material formulation;
  • film thickness;
  • colour;
  • printing and ink;
  • additives;
  • adhesives;
  • coatings; and
  • finished-product construction.

For procurement and private-label projects, buyers should therefore confirm:

Does the applicable certificate cover the actual finished product specification being purchased?

DIN CERTCO, Seedling and EN 13432

EN 13432 is the technical standard.

DIN CERTCO operates certification schemes through which qualifying products may be assessed against applicable industrial-compostability requirements.

Where a certification conformity mark is used, the relevant product must fall within the applicable certified scope and all trademark and mark-use requirements must be satisfied.

Possession of a certificate should not be interpreted as permission to apply the certification mark to an unrelated product or product category.

TÜV AUSTRIA OK compost INDUSTRIAL Is a Separate Certification

ORIZON also holds a separate OK compost INDUSTRIAL certificate by TÜV AUSTRIA.

This certificate is separate from the DIN CERTCO certificate references above.

Current ORIZON OK compost INDUSTRIAL Certificate

  • Certificate Holder: Shandong Orizon Biomaterials Co., Ltd.
  • Certificate No.: TA8012004817
  • Certification Scheme: OK compost INDUSTRIAL
  • Certified Product Type: Bags for collection of biodegradable refuse
  • Composting Environment: Industrial composting
  • Valid Until: 30 July 2030
  • Status: Active

The current TÜV AUSTRIA certificate scope should not be extended to flexible packaging, mailers, garment bags, produce bags or other product categories that are not stated within the applicable certificate scope.

DIN CERTCO certification and TÜV AUSTRIA OK compost certification are separate certification schemes and should be verified separately.

Can Private-Label Brands Use Certification Marks?

Certification mark use should be confirmed before artwork approval and printing.

A private-label buyer should not assume that a supplier’s certificate automatically authorises use of a DIN CERTCO, Seedling, OK compost or other conformity mark on every branded product.

Before using a certification mark, confirm:

  • that the proposed finished product falls within the applicable certified scope;
  • that the intended product specification satisfies the certificate conditions;
  • that the applicable certification and trademark requirements are met;
  • whether private-label registration or notification is required;
  • which certification or registration reference should be displayed; and
  • whether artwork review or approval is required.

Certification marks should never be used to imply certification of a product outside the applicable scope.

Does EN 13432 Mean Home Compostable?

No.

EN 13432 addresses compostability under controlled industrial composting conditions.

An EN 13432-related industrial compostability certificate should not be presented as evidence of home compostability.

Home-compostability claims require separate evidence and an applicable home-compostability certification scope.

ORIZON’s current home-compostability documentation is maintained separately.

Does EN 13432 Certification Mean Full PPWR Compliance?

No.

EN 13432-related certification addresses compostability requirements.

It does not by itself establish compliance with every requirement under Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste.

For additional information, see:

PPWR vs EN 13432: What Compostable Packaging Buyers Need to Know

Does EN 13432 Certification Mean PPWR Compliant?

No. EN 13432 certification alone does not demonstrate full compliance with Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR).

The PPWR covers a broader set of packaging requirements, and the EU is developing updated harmonised compostability standards under the Regulation.

Certification Scope Notice

Certification Is Product-Specific

ORIZON manufactures a wider range of compostable bag and flexible-packaging products than the products covered by any single certificate.

Manufacturing capability and certification scope are not the same thing.

The fact that ORIZON can manufacture a particular product type does not mean that the product is covered by DIN CERTCO, TÜV AUSTRIA or another compostability certificate.

Certificate applicability must be established from:

  1. the applicable certificate;

  2. the stated product scope;

  3. the finished-product specification; and

  4. the applicable certification body’s requirements.

For custom OEM projects, certification should be reviewed before final artwork, certification claims or mass production.

Request EN 13432 Certification Documents

For supplier qualification, retailer audits, tenders or private-label projects, buyers may request the relevant current certification documentation.

Please provide:

  • product type;
  • dimensions;
  • film thickness;
  • material formulation or requirement;
  • film colour;
  • printing requirements;
  • additives or special product features;
  • intended certification claim or mark; and
  • destination market.

ORIZON can then review which available certification documentation may be relevant to the proposed product.
